UCSB's leading resource

for data analysis, machine learning, and more

Data Science at UCSB is a student run club centered around developing career paths in the field of data science. Our organization teaches members how to use programs like R, Python, and SQL, which students then utilize in their own group-led projects. Apart from these hands-on activities, Data Science at UCSB also hosts key speakers from data-centered companies in the industry. Our organization is centered around a collaborative community of self-driven students who strive to further their knowledge in the realm of data science.

FAQ
  • Can I join?

Anyone can become a member of our club at any point in time. Paying a quarterly membership fee of $15 grants membership to our club and access to a variety of other resources. To register, please drop by one of our weekly meetings (see below) and find one of our club officers to discuss registration. Please note that being a member grants you access to our club’s offerings, but that’s about it. Signing up and paying dues won’t result in an ounce of data science mastery without any work; the responsibility of using the available resources to learn falls upon you.

  • How can I contact the club?

If you have any questions regarding information about our club, please contact us at datascienceucsb@gmail.com or shoot us a message via our Facebook page.

  • Where and when does the club meet?

Our club regularly meets in the DAHC every Tuesday from 7PM-9PM. This location may vary between the school year and summer session. If you have any questions regarding our weekly meetings, please do not hesitate to contact us!

  • What happens at our club meetings?

At our club meetings, members meet with their groups to work on projects. (Note: Each Fall quarter, we will be hosting a quarter-long Data Science Primer workshop. During Winter and Spring, weekly regular meetings are dedicated to working on projects.

  • What does the club offer paid members?

Members are granted access to our weekly project group meetings, access to a DataCamp subscription, priority seating at events such as DataTalks and workshops, mentorship and technical assistance from advanced members, and exclusive internship opportunities from companies that seek members from the club.

  • What does the club offer non-members?

If you are not a member of the club you are still welcome to attend all our events! Please keep in mind that only club members will receive priority seating.

  • I have already registered for the club, but have not received my DataCamp subscription yet. How can I get access?

For any issues regarding your DataCamp subscription, please email us at datascienceucsb@gmail.com and include “DataCamp” in the subject line. Once we confirm your membership, we will help you get set up with our DataCamp subscription.

  • I don't know how to program. Can I still join?

Yes! You might not be prepared to jump into a project immediately, but we offer resources that will guide you to that point. We hold a quarter long Data Science Primer Workshop (see below) each Fall that aims to prepare new programmers to tackle their own projects. If you can’t participate in the workshop but would still like to learn, we will have all of our course material open sourced and available online to members. We encourage you to take full advantage of the abundance of resources available for free on the internet!

  • Why should I attend weekly meetings to work on a project when I can just work on one at home?

One reason is that it’s usually easier to work through and finish a project with other people. When you encounter a seemingly insurmountable bug in your script or simply can’t produce the results you’re looking for, it’s easy to lose motivation and give up on your project altogether. Our club meetings promote a sense of community for individuals passionate about data science. Collaborating with others who share your academic interests will provide you with a better opportunity to overcome obstacles you encounter when completing your project.

  • What is the Data Science Primer Workshop?

We host a 10-week-long Data Science Primer workshop every Fall quarter. This workshop teaches participants the fundamentals of data science including data wrangling, data visualization, and basic data modeling. By the end of the program participants will gain a basic proficiency with Python—a popular programming language, as well as some Python packages used to work with data, such as Pandas and Scikit-Learn. Participants will finish the quarter long workshop having acquired the skills necessary to tackle projects in the club meetings beginning in the following quarter.
